Posted on 04.10.17 by James McKeogh

Office floors, shops and commercial buildings are difficult enough to keep clean at the best of times, but Winter brings along a whole host of problems to contend with. The moisture, dirt and salt tracked into office floors and premises on the feet of staff and customers at this time of the year combine to produce a stubborn, unsightly and dangerous hazard.

Maintaining clean floors in offices and commercial buildings is therefore crucial to ensure that your business premises looks clean and professional, but also to and during the winter is important not only to keep your business looking clean and professional, but to also keep the floor safe for employees and visitors. Wet, dirty floors increase the chances of slip and fall accidents which could potentially result in costly legal action and compensation claims. Too many successful compensation claims against your company could drive up the cost of insurance, or even make it impossible to get adequate public liability cover which could force you out of business.

There are a number of ways to protect your office floors against the ravages of winter and keep your employees and customers safe:

Entrance Mats: Salt, dirt and moisture can pose a serious threat to your office floors and staff during the winter. Tracked in debris can degrade your floors and create a potential slip hazard for your employees and customers. Entrance mats provide a first line of defense for your floors. Entrance mats will also save you time and money spent on keeping your floors clean.

Floor Cleaning and Maintenance: Regular floor cleaning and maintenance is the best way to ensure your office floors don’t be come a health and safety hazard. Over time, floors do become dirty and as a result they can degrade and lose their colour. Regular floor cleaning will also ensure that dirt, salt and moisture are removed and do not permanently damage your floors.

Wet Floor Signs: During the winter it is important to keep your customers and employees safe and healthy. It is important to clearly identify and alert others to areas that are slippery to reduce chances of people sustaining a slip and fall injury.

Increase Vacuuming: During the winter you should increase vacuuming, not only to remove salt and dirt, but also dust. During the winter, dust build-up increases and carpets act like giant sponges soaking up dust and allergens. Vacuuming your carpets more frequently during the winter will increase air quality and reduce damage from salt, dirt and moisture.
